Most of you are likely newly engaged, or in the middle of planning your weddings so you won't remember when "the barn" project first began. Let's go back to late 2007... Dade and I decided it was time to make a move from Miami to New England. In early 2008 we started house hunting and I had it locked firmly in my brain that we were going to find an old home with a barn on the property which we could magically transform into my dream White Aisle work space. Yeah... O.K. We ended up looking at a variety of antique properties in Southern New Hampshire and found the perfect match in our yellow Victorian farmhouse. As luck would have it our home has both an attached barn and a second barn on the property. It used to be a dairy farm way back when.
We moved in late April 2008 and figured the barn would be priority one once we were unpacked and ready to start our list of home improvements. Then:
- While unpacking we realized the kitchen of the home was trashed and really needed to be upgraded immediately thus resulting in a renovation budget that doubled, then tripled...
- The economy fell into a giant pile of crap
- That pesky melanoma came roaring back into our lives with a stream of medical bills and drama which would leave us saying, "what barn?" for the next year.
Well, after spending the last 8 years working out of whatever space we could get, the barn came back into focus this Fall on a tighter budget than originally planned for, but I am super excited to say that we will be moving in this weekend.
Here are some of the photos I collected over time as inspiration for the project. It really started with a photo of Elizabeth Messina's wedding.
However... this was the space we had in our attached barn. These are photos of step one, pouring a concrete floor. Up until then there was gravel, a few walls and a two seater outhouse in there. That's right... for all you romantics out there that just can't get enough of your significant other, our home came equipped with an outhouse with room for two.
Stay tuned to see how the barn / bathroom turned out...
